2020 MONTOUR 24 ENDURANCE RUNS CANCELLED

The Montour Area Recreation Commission (MARC) regrets to announce the cancellation of the 2020 Montour 24 Endurance Runs. MARC sincerely regrets the inconvenience and disappointment this announcement will cause for our many friends who have been training and looking forward to this event, but MARC no longer believes it will be able to ensure the safety and well-being of our racers, their families, and friends. The 2020 event is being cancelled; it will not be rescheduled.

MARC is working with the RunSignup platform to automatically issue full refunds to all race registrants.

For questions or problems, please contact Bob Stoudt, MARC Director, at (570) 336-2060 or RStoudt@MontourRec.com.

MARC wishes each of you a safe 2020 season and hopes that conditions will allow the M24 to return again in 2021.

Full refunds are being offered to all race registrants.

2020 Changes

NEW COURSE LOCATION
As the race evolves, it's fun to reminiscence on some of the fun the original course. A lot of you will remember the stream crossing (aka Dave's Rucky Chucky), the climb (aka Mandatory Walk Break or Dave's Heartbreak Hill), and the upper rail trail (aka The Backside). We'll miss the old course but the new location will prove to be a very nice improvement! The new 4.0 mile course will wrap around the picturesque Lake Chillisquaque at the Montour Preserve in Danville, PA. The park has paved parking, bathroom facilities, multiple pavilions, and room for camping. We think everyone will be very happy with the change!  Learn more about the new venue at MontourPreserve.org.

Overall Information

RACE OVERVIEW
The Montour 24 offers a 24-hour individual endurance trail run or a four-person relay 24-hour endurance trail run on a fully supported loop course at the Montour Preserve in Danville, PA. Food and water will be available every 4 miles located just past the start/finish line along with an aid stop a little past the halfway point on the course. The aid station pavilion will be fully stocked and will include a variety of foods such as fresh fruit, chips, energy bars, sandwiches and snacks. We will also rotate special items such as grilled cheese, pierogies, and soup throughout the race day. Relay team members will have access to the aid station while they are running but all teams should plan on bringing their own food to eat while they are waiting for their turn to run again.

To help keep this race from producing unnecessary trash, please bring your own water bottle to use during the race!! We will provide insulated cups along with iced coffee cups for our delicious Bason Coffee, but feel free to bring your favorite travel mug from home!

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND MAP
The 4.0 mile loop course is on low-technical single track. The trails are wide enough to run next to another runner or easily pass them throughout most of the course. You can find the course map here.

WHAT THIS RACE IS NOT
This race is not a hardcore, qualify for the 24-Hour World Time Trail Championships, measure each centimeter you traveled, wipe-your-butt-on-the-course-so-you-don't-waste-a-step, type of 24-hour race. Montour 24 was designed to fill the gap between 400m track looped races and hardcore trail looped races. What Montour 24 is, is an introduction to trails for the road runner, a stepping stone to test the ultra distance, a fun way to set a PR, a time to party with other crazy running friends.

CAMPING
There is plenty of space for you to set up a tent or canopy directly along the course, which is what the majority of participants will do and we encourage you to do the same. The park will be open Friday at noon and you may camp for free the entire weekend. Relay teams are encouraged to decorate their team tents and bring tailgating games to play between your turn to run.  Charcoal grills will be welcome, but open fires will not be allowed.

Would you or your fans rather sleep somewhere a bit less ‘rustic’ before or after the race?  Visit our friends at the Columbia-Montour Visitors Bureau for lots of great options.

RESTROOMS/SHOWERS
Restroom facilities will be located near the start/finish area and camping area.  There are no shower facilities at the Montour Preserve, but hot and cold running water are available in the restrooms.

AWARDS
The awards for the Montour 24 are as unique as the history of the area!  Each overall male and female winner, along with the winners of the 4-person team relay, will receive a custom forged railroad spike knife. Every participant, no matter the distance run, will receive a custom finisher award.

PETS We love dogs too, but pets are not allowed at the Montour Preserve.  Please leave all pets at home.

ALCOHOL Sorry, folks.  Alcohol is not allowed at the Montour Preserve.  We recommend you work up a strong thirst on Friday and Saturday, then head to the Old Forge Brewing Company in Danville on Sunday to wet your whistle.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE 8:00PM EST JUNE 19, 2020

T-SHIRT REGISTRATION DEADLINE 8:00PM EST MAY 24, 2020

4-Person Relay Teams

RELAY TEAM RULES
The relay option will be span the entire 24 hours. The team will rotate 1 runner after every loop, in a predetermined order you decide on, to complete the 24 hours. Your team will have one belt with one bib that will be handed off to the next person as you progress through the team order. We will not regulate your team with passing the bib as we expect everyone can handle themselves in making this work.

REGISTERING
Relay teams will register as individual runners in the 4-Person Team Relay event registration. You will be prompted during the registration process to create a new team or join your team if it has already been created by another team member.

Course Rules

RESTING RULES
The course is designed so that you may, at any time, have access to the aid station and tenting area directly after completing a lap. You may rest as long as you want and start back running when you want. To make it as fair as possible, we ask that you do not leave the race site unless you absolutely must do so. If you decide that you must leave the event during the run, you must check out with the timing company located near the start/finish line.

We expect relay teams to also stay at the race site for the majority of the 24 hours. It would be an unfair advantage for relay members who are local to go home and sleep in their beds when runners who have traveled from far away are sleeping in tents at the site. Relay team members are permitted to leave the race site for the purposes of obtaining food, additional gear, etc.

RUNNING AT NIGHT
Runners must have a headlamp/flashlight at all times from dusk until dawn – no exceptions! The course will not be illuminated during the night except on the dam, at the aid station, and start/finish line. We will marshal the course throughout the night for your safety.

CREWS AND PACERS
Runners may have crews and can access them through the tenting/canopy area and through the aid station pavilion. Pacers will be not be allowed for this race. We do allow friends and family to take a lap with you if you desire.

Cups
The Montour 24 strives to be cup-free to the extent possible. Please bring your own water bottle to use during the race. We’ll provide insulated cups and iced coffee cups for our delicious Bason Coffee, but feel free to bring your favorite travel mug from home!
